Jam of the Day: You Get What You Give

You’re a goddamn liar if claim you didn’t wear a bucket hat in 1998 bc of this song

The story behind this song is actually pretty interesting, so sit back and relax while I tell you a tale of an incredibly talented dude who set out to intentionally become a one hit wonder.

Jimmy is such a cunt

So, as the story goes, The New Radicals was started by a bucket hat enthusiast named Gregg Alexander. Gregg (yea he has two G’s. At least he isn’t a Geoff) was a somewhat successful song writer who hired a bunch of musicians to record an album and the outcome was Maybe You’ve Been Brainwashed Too.

Googled sexy brainwash, Allison Brie appears.

The single You Get What You Give drops and becomes an instant sensation

Rightfully so

And motherfucking GreGG decides he doesn’t want to be famous and calls the rest of the tour off and cancels the band. Says he wants to live in obscurity and this was an experiment. Disappears while quietly winning a Grammy and getting nominated for an Oscar for songs he writes for other people. To each their own, I guess.

There are a few interviews out there where he tries to explain himself but he comes off as a little weird and pressed, so go find the. If you care (I know you don’t.)

Since none of you care to do a deep dive and I clearly don’t want to take the time to explain it to you, the least I can do is indulge you with two interesting facts about the band. First, the following lyrics were written as a social experiment by Gregg:

Health insurance rip off lying FDA big bankers buying
Fake computer crashes dining
Cloning while they’re multiplying
Fashion shoots with Beck and Hanson
Courtney Love, and Marilyn Manson
You’re all fakes
Run to your mansions
Come around
We’ll kick your ass in

He wanted to see which would garner more attention: his criticism of societal issues or his calling out of his contemporaries. I don’t think I have to tell you which brought about controversy…

Remember this fucking guy???

The other is that while touring, they would open shows with You Get What You Give, and then, after they’d played their set, they’d come out and play it again for an encore. Most one hit wonder shit I’ve ever heard.

Such an underrated movie

So there you go, The New Radicals were an intentional one hit wonder.

Now go fuck yourselves.
